The other day, I took Jamie and Ari to one of my favourite local playground. And again, today, Jamie and I went to the same place. I like this place very much. You see, it has a lot of trees that provide the shade, very exciting and challenging playground for adventurous children, or if you have younger kids, there are plenty smaller equipments for them. Also there is a road safety training track to learn about the road rules. I think it's really good for the children to learn about the road rules from the early age. If you feel like kicking a ball or flying a kite, there is a big open field. Just bring the picnic basket because there are plenty of picnic tables. That's the reasons why I really like this playground.

Sleepover Party

"How do you like the idea of a sleepover party for your birthday?" I asked Ari. "Rrrr, mmmmm, I'm not sure!" he replied. "Ok, that's fine. Have a think about it and let me know tomorrow" I said.

Less than five minutes later, he came to see me and said "I think I really like the idea. So, how many friends can I invite mum?"

Wait..wait... take it easy boy. I don't think I can have ten 'nine years old' boys, sleeping in the tent in my back yard. Just the thought of it already made me headache.

In the end, he invited seven friends, but only one that had a sleepover in the tent. It was a bit disappointing. The other six came and help to celebrate Ari's birthday from three in the afternoon & they didn't leave till about ten at night. They had a great time.

The activities that we did:
* Pinata. Through the week before the big day, Jamie and I made and decorated it.
* Cops and robbers.
* Pass the puzzle. Its always a favourite game.
* Hide and seek. They loved it, especially the did it at night.
* Sparkles and glowing sticks.
* Rocket baloons.
* Movie time.
* Toast some marsh mellow. Forgot to mention that we had bon fire too.

Over all, it was a great party. And now have to start thinking for next year party. Any idea that you like to share??

Dust Storm

My boys and I are very lucky and so grateful that we could travel to Finland, where my hubby is from. The city is Lahti, southern part of Finland, about 100 kilometres north-east of the capital Helsinki. It really is beautiful city.

For me personally, as I grew up in a tropical country, this whole summer experience was just mind-blowing. The berry picking, mushroom picking, swimming in the lake, fishing, sauna, and the midnight sun. It was just gorgeous. Thanks again to Steve's family and friends (Vaari, Terhi mummu, Aili mummu, Siru and Seppo, Ninni and family, Pia and family, Ulla and Hannu, Jyri and Camilla and Alexandra, Timo and family, Ollie, and Kari).

Indoor Soccer

It has been raining on and off here in Sydney for the last three weeks. The soccer field is so wet,so for the last three weeks, Ari and Jamie didn't have training or games. Just got the news that Jamie's tomorrow game is cancelled too.

The club's manager has organised training in the indoor field and is scheduled for this Saturday. The boys are really looking forward to it as they never been in to the indoor field.

The Last Stop : Glenn Davis

This is the last part of the Easter holiday trip. Before we were heading home, we stayed a few nights at Glenn Davis. It's such a beautiful place, good facilities and best of all, it's FREE. Yes, it has got free campsite with a hot shower and the kiosk that open on the weekend.

We went for a drive to the nearby place called Turon Gates and found really stunning view. To get there, the car has to cross the river through an old wooden bridge, but we (well...the boys) decided instead of drive over the bridge, we drove straight through the river. It was really fun. The boys enjoyed it so much.

Easter Holiday Trip (Part 2)

This is a long overdue post that I have been delaying for sometime. Bourke was the next destination after we left Ligthning Ridge. We camped at the really nice caravan park with very reasonable rate. It has two lovely swimming pools, clean bathroom and excellent barbeque and kitchen facility. If you ever visit Bourke, I recommend this place.

Happy 5th Birthday Jamie

Today is Jamie's 5th birthday.....gee how time flies. We will have a small party for him later. I have been so slack to organise one for him. Today, as normal birthday celebration ritual, four of us had dinner together with a birthday noodle as a must. Followed by birthday cake that Steve baked. It was a chocolate cake and was delicious.

And the most important thing for him, of course, the present. I gave him a binocular with compass in it, and the extended robot arm, with the hope that he will picking up his toys and pack them away. It worked so far, for how long? I don't know......

I'm Back.....To The Reality

After spending a bit over two weeks for our easter holiday which we needed desperately, now the reality kicks in. No more relaxing time, no more sleep-ins, no more lazing around. All my usual routines are waiting for me. From cooking, taking and picking up the boys to and from school, cleaning, washing, etc,etc. Too many too mention.

Well, its time to save up again for our next holiday. I'll post the story and some fotos later on in the week.

By the way, how was your Easter break? Hope you had the good one as much as mine

Pikelets Recipe

Just want to share this very simple and easy pikelets recipe. You can have them for morning or afternoon tea or even for dessert. I always double the recipe since my boys love it so much.

Here is the recipe (makes 25)
1 egg
1 tbspoon of caster sugar
1 cup of self raising flour
1 tbspoon of melted butter
1/2 cup of milk
pinch of salt

Method
Whisk egg and sugar until white and creamy. Then add the flour, salt, milk and butter gradually until smooth.
Heat a non-stick frypan over medium heat. Drop level tablespoonfuls of the mixture into the pan. When the bubbles appear on the surface, turn it over and cook other side for half a minute or until golden brown.

Serve with jam and cream, or maple syrup, or ice cream (my favourite) to make a different varieties.

Got The Evidence!!

Now I know who the culprits are. I saw them do it. I caught them stealing them. And now, I got the evidence, stored in my camera.

It was a few days ago I noticed that some of my chillies have gone. I didn't remember I picked them since they were still young and green. My boys, nope, they wouldn't go near them unless I asked their help to water it. So, who did it?

Until one morning, I saw few cockatoos sat on the edge of the balcony. They moved slowly toward my chilli tree, and snap....with the very sharp beak, they picked it. I quickly ran to get my camera...bugger....no batteries. So no evidence was taken that morning as I shooed them away before my chillies were completely gone.

It wasn't until the next morning that I had my camera ready in my hand and waited for those beautiful but naughty birds came back. This time, I got it. Yes, I got the evidence...MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

A Very Proud Parents

Last Friday was a presentation day at my boys little athletic club, after six months competing at track and field events. It was every Friday from six o'clock in the evening till about eight, Ari and Jamie competed in the events such 70m, 100m, 200m, 100m hurdles, long jump, high jump, discus, and shot put. They were awarded points for every event that they enter and received a bonus point every time they have better personal best record.

And the results are Ari came fourth, just missed out on the podium, and Jamie came third. Fantastic effort boys. Both of my boys have made Steven and I standing up very proud with their achievement. For us, to be champion is not important, we are so happy as long as they have fun and enjoy themselves.

After Jamie got his trophy, he said that next season, he will try harder and he wants to be number one. Very good attitude, as I didn't expect he would say that. Well done Ari and Jamie......

Beautiful Sunday

Took advantage of beautiful weather and the last weekend before the daylight saving ending next Sunday, we decided to have a ferry ride to the city. We took 10 o'clock ferry and it was so packed. It wasn't surprise me because the weather was so lovely and the cheap ticket they offer every Sunday for the family. Family Funday Sunday, is $2.50 per person with under 4 years old is free with full paid adult, and that is included train, bus, ferry and some private bus as well. So for us, it cost $10.00, what a fantastic value.

Fifty five minutes later, after all the excitement on board, we arrived at Circular Quay and walked around the area, where Sydney Opera House just a very short stroll away. I can't let the beautiful view of Sydney Harbour and Sydney Harbour Bridge pass without I capture it with my camera. So there I was, very busy took so much pictures while the boys were running around happily just being in the big city.

After walked around the opera house, we all felt so hungry. We took the bus to China Town, and had lunch at the food court there. We had three different dish. The boys shared nice noodle soup with some dumplings and meatballs, Steven ordered yummy chillie chicken with some vegetables served with rice, and I couldn't resist home-cooked style Indonesian food. Yummy....

Then we walked to Darling Harbour where the nice playground with sandpit is. Ari and Jamie just loved being there. They had so much fun digging and play in the sand. We were there for nearly two hours. It was so relaxing when the boys played nicely together.

Before we took the ferry back home, we bought ourselves nice ice cream. It was a nice thing to finish the beautiful Sunday.

Durian : King of Fruits?

Some people say that durian is king of fruits. Not too sure why, but definitely it has a very distinctive look, smell, flavour and texture. Its shape roundish, with an average size of a small soccer ball, and it has got thorns all over it. Inside, its divided into few sections, which contains two or three pieces, and the colour of the flesh is pale-yellow.

The texture of its flesh is kinda soft and creamy, but once you get close to the stone, it gets a bit stringy.

One thing about durian, you will love it OR you will hate it, nothing in between. My hubby and I are both durian lovers. He doesn't buy durian too often, as the price is not cheap here in Australia. Few days ago, he bought a frozen durian as a treat for us, and it was so yummy. Of course fresh is always the best, but for me, as I grew up in Indonesia where you can find durian very easily, the frozen one was OK too, especially when I am craving for it.

Oh.....So Busy!!

It' has been so long that I haven't been updating my blog. Lately, it feels that the time flies thrice faster than before. Where does the time fly?

It is very busy time for me, with the plan to move to the bigger place. Looking for the house that we really like with good neighbourhood and excellent school is something that you can't get overnight. I browse through the net, local paper and home magazine. So far, no luck for me yet.

Then, packing....aarrgh, really hate packing, but it is something that has to be done whether I like it or not. Sorting out stuff for garage sale is other thing that can be hard as well. Steven and I often argue about thing that we want to keep or sale, unlike Ari and Jamie, who doing OK with sorting out their toys.

Other things that still in the agenda are organising garage sale, calling the removal company, calling the electricity company, phone company etc......oohhh, never ending.

There Is Something About Lightning Ridge

OPAL, yes definitely opal. Lightning Ridge is one of the few places in the world where the precious and highly prized black opal is found. It is about 770 kilometres north-west of Sydney in the outback of NSW, has a populations about 1200. During summer time, the temperature can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, and in winter, can go as low as 3 degrees.But for me and my boys, there is something very special about this place. Even though take so long to get there but that doesn't stop us to keep wanting to visit again.

We have been twice there, and would like to go there again next Easter holiday. The first time we went there, I didn't expect too much to see or do. I thought that the boys would be so bored after few moment fossicking. But, guess what....they sat and dig the big pile of leftover from the opal mine for hours, for nearly everyday during we stayed there. They really enjoyed it and had so much fun. We did the self guided tour as well in to the old opal mine. How interesting that in the old days, without the modern machinery, they still managed to get the opal.

Another place that we liked was a bore bath. It's a natural hot spring pool that very popular among the locals and the tourists. Its really soothing and relaxing to dip in the pool after a long day full of activities. Bottles house is another interesting place to visit. The boys were so fascinated with this very well looked after house.

The last but not the least, is having barbeque on top of the hill, while watching the gorgeous sunset. Its just magical.

The second visit there, we brought a friend of mine from overseas that happened to have holiday as the same time as we were going, and , I was so glad that she really enjoyed it.

Choc Chip Cookies

After the heatwave that strucked last week, 22 degrees with rain feels so good, especially for the firefighters that have been working very hard to control the fire.

For me at home, during these rainy days, baking with Jamie's help is always fun. I always try too make something that he can actually involve with it, from measuring the flour and sugar, cracking and whisking the egg, and the best part, of course, tasting it. Today, we decided to bake some choc chip cookies and some coconut and banana bread.

Here is the choc chip cookies recipe:
1 cup plain flour
1 cup self raising flour
1/2 cup caster sugar
1 cup dark choc bits
125 gr butter, melted
1 egg, lightly beaten

Method:
Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
Sift the flour, then add sugar and choc bits. Mix butter and egg, then pour into the mixture.
Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden.

Sizzling Sydney

For the last 4 days, Sydney's western suburb has been reaching 40+ degrees. Its feel very uncomfortable and all I want to do is staying at home in the nice air conditioned room. Some people try to cool down by going to the swimming pool or the beach. Mall with the air condition is another option too. Ice cream becomes a daily treat now in my house.

2 days in a row, we went to the local swimming pool. It felt so good and fresh while we were in the water. Once we got out of the water, the hot breeze hit us immediately. It's very unpleasant.

All the outdoor sport activities being cancelled despite the fear that children will feel unwell and dehydrated. About 60 bushfires burning around NSW and many more down in Victoria. The fire figthters have been working very hard to control the fire but sometimes it's too hard, especially with very the gusty wind.

Hopefully all this will end soon (for temporary) as the weather forecast for next week shows between 24-29 degrees with possible showers. What a relieve....

Every first Sunday of the month, at Glenbrook, about 70 kilometres west of Sydney there is a mini train ride. It has a picnic and barbeque area and very popular for the birthday party. A ride goes for three laps through the tunnel, bridge and pedestrian crossing. It's really good for the kids and the adults.

Today, we went there with some friends and had so much fun. Here are some pictures from today outing.

Gee....I am a terrible mum aren't I? I was so looking forward to send my boys back to school. It's not that we didn't have good time during the holiday, its just come to the point that they have been too long spending time at home, hooked in to the games, and I can't have "me time". Anyway, I better stop complaining and enjoy my free time while they are at school.

Happy Australia Day

On 26th of January, here in Australia, we celebrate Australian Day, the day that commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. At the local park near where we live, the celebration was started with spectacular hot air balloons at six in the morning, the circus shows, clowns, the amusement rides, flyball dog demonstration, the outback station, the international food stalls, and was finished with fireworks at eleven at night.

Mom, What's For Dinner?

Its something that I hear nearly every day. For our dinner tonight, I made some pork and chives dumpling and steam chinesse brocoli with oyster sauce. We had them with some rice.

Here is the recipe for my dumplings

Ingredients :
500 gr pork minced
2 bunches garlic chives, chopped
50 pieces dumpling wrap
6 garlic, very finely chopped
2 teaspoon of sesame seed oil
1 egg
salt and pepper

Method:
Mix all the ingredients, then put about 1 teaspoonfull of the mix into the dumpling wrap, right in the center. Fold it, and wet the edge with water. In the hot pan, put some oil and place the dumpling till brown. Pour some boiling water and cover it for about 3 minutes or until cooked. Serve with chilli sauce.

Yarrangobilly

In our last camping trip, we stayed at Yarrangobilly Village camp ground. It was such a beautiful place and this is one of our favourite camp sites. The crystal clear running water of Yarrangobilly River becomes main attraction for us and it was a very important water resource during our stay there. The river has a perfect depth for Ari and Jamie to have a play. They went up and down the stream with their small rubber boats. When they got bored with it, they built a little dam made of the rocks they collected from the bottom of the river. The river is a good place for fishing too. Steven caught a few trout, but pity we couldn't have them on our dinner plates. They were under size so he let them back in the water.

Yarrangobilly Caves, which is about 20 minutes away from our camp site was a good place to visit too. There are several caves in the area, but we only did self guided tour in South Glory Cave. It has very spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formation. We all loved being inside the cave. At the beginning, Jamie was feeling a little scared, but we convinced him that there is no monster that would eat him.

After we had our lunch, we walked down the fairly steep track toward the thermal pool. The water temperature is 27°C all year round. The boys had a great time swimming there, while I was worrying how to get Jamie get back up the hill to the car park. But I was wrong, because didn't even once he whined about the steep hill.

We enjoyed bushwalking too. Both Jamie and Ari were so strong and got a good stamina for their age.

How Was Your Weekend?

Ours was great. On Saturday, we didn't do too much, but on Sunday we had a great day. After a few choices of where to go for a picnic, we decided to do a beach picnic. We went to La Perouse, a beautiful beach located south of Sydney. It is very popular beach, even just to find a parking spot, we had to go around the block a few times. We finally got one, not too far too walk to the main beach.

Ari and Jamie went straight away and hit the water, while Steven and I set up our beach tent. It didn't take us too long to sit in comfort. From a distance, I saw Jamie trying to stand on his body board, as if he was a professional surfer. So cute.

Not long after, Ari came back to see us asking for lunch. We had sausage sandwiches, sausage rolls and some cocktail frankfurts. I also packed some carrot and cucumber sticks and some nectarines. For desert, we went to the local shop to get some ice cream. It seems that the beach day always goes nicely with some ice cream.

Then we walked to the other side, and we saw this snake show. I heard that this guy has been doing this show for years. He is basically telling about all different snakes and reptiles, how venomous they are, how to avoid them and how to recognise the snake if you are bitten. Its useful to know to inform the hospital to get the right anti-venom. We didn't stay there too long as my two boys started to loose their interest as they couldn't see the show. It was very crowded.

We continued our walk a little further, just to find another beautiful part of the sea. The crystal clear water looks so lovely. No wonder so many snorkelers and divers were there. We walked trough the very stunning rock formation and across the bridge. I just loved to see those rock and sand formation. Its gorgeous.

Tumbarumba Rodeo

Tumbarumba Rodeo is held every year, on new years day. My boys and I along with our good friends went to see it. There were wild horses, bucking bulls, barrel racing and team roping. Also the clown, sideshows and food stalls. It was a very big event. The crowd were large, babies, children, elderly, family, most of them dressed up as a cowboy or cowgirl. You can see the country atmosphere there. Very interesting.

We started our day with the busy morning preparing our lunch, drink and other nibbles. We left Tumut around 9.30 and we didn't get back until 6 in the evening. The day was beautiful, bright sunny day with nice blue sky and the cool breeze blowing once in a while. Steven really enjoyed the show, while for me once I saw a bull, I saw them all. I liked the horses though. Jamie and Ari had nice time with the games and slush puppy. I could just see the big smiles on their faces when we left the show.

On the way home, we visited a friend that lives and works at the apple orchard.Pity that the apple season not starting till February. Otherwise it would be another experience for us to do apple picking.

While we were in the car, the boys already talked about when they can go see another rodeo.

Cherry, anyone??

During our holiday to the Snowy Mountains, we went to Batlow to do some cherry picking. Batlow is a little town about 443km south west of Sydney.It's surrounded by orchards and is very famous as one of Australia's main producers of apples, pears, cherries, berries and stone fruits.

My boys and I really enjoyed picking the cherries. Everyone of us had a bucket and tried to fill it with the cherries right up to the top. The taste of it is so beautiful, really sweet and juicy, and that make almost impossible for us not to put some in to our mouth. Mmmm, so delicious......

After one and a half hour, we went back to the hut with three instead of four buckets full of cherries, because Jamie decided not to collect but eat them instead. Smart boy.....

At the end, we paid around $22 for a bit over four kilos. Not bad considering you have to pay $12/kilo in Sydney. We thought that the whole four kilos of them would last for sometime, but we were so wrong. They've gone in few days with only four of us eating them. Its just too hard to resist ... so nice.

Just before we came back to Sydney, we did another picking, and we picked about the same amount. And the same thing happened again, didn't last as long as I liked to. Never mind, there is always next season to do it again.

First of all, thank you for visiting and I hope you have a wonderfull new year. It has been two weeks that my boys and I were away from home. We just got back this morning and we had a fantastic holiday. I'll update the story in the next couple of days complete with photos. Bye for now and take care.

Upcoming Camping Trip : Snowy Mountains Region

Christmas holiday is approaching very fast. Like usual, we are planning to go camping, and this time, Snowy Mountains is our choice. The Snowy Mountains are on Australia's eastern seaboard from Sydney and Melbourne. It'll take us about 5 hours driving to Tumut, the last town before entering the region, plus another 2 or 3 hours to the camp site, just depends where do we want to set the camp.

I have been very busy for the last few days, shopping and packing (argh, I hate packing), while Steven fixing and making sure that our camper trailer will up to scratch for the trip.

We are so looking forward to it. Every morning Jamie crosses the calendar, counting down how many sleeps he need before we leaving. How exciting.

Bush walking, swimming and fishing will become our daily actifities beside cooking and eating. Spotting the wild life like kangaroos, emus, wombats, echidnas, or just listening to the laughing cookaburra can be so relaxing too. But the best part is four of us are sitting down in front of bonfire, eating roasted marshmellow, and watching millions of stars in the night sky. Just magic.....
